Frequently asked questions
How much does a chess coach cost with JD Chess?
Three options depending on your goals: private lessons at $40 per hour, a 10-lesson pack at $350, or a small-group masterclass at $179 for eight intensive hours. The 10-lesson pack is the most complete option to build real progress over several weeks.
When is a chess coach actually worth it?
When your progress has stalled despite regular practice, or when you sense you are working on the wrong sub-skills without being able to identify which. A coach shortens the time between "something feels off" and "I know exactly what to fix". It is particularly useful between 1200 and 1700, and at the 2000 Elo threshold.
How are JD Chess online lessons structured?
Each session runs over video call with a shared chessboard. You bring recent games, we analyze them together, identify two or three priorities, and you leave with a concrete work plan for the week. The teaching is grounded in your actual games, not detached theory.
Do I need a minimum chess rating to take lessons?
No. I teach total beginners learning the rules and players targeting 2000 Elo alike. The content adapts to your level and goals, not the other way around.
How fast will I see chess improvement?
Most students see measurable progress within four to six weeks of consistent work. The first gains usually come from removing recurring mistakes and tightening time management in real games. A full structured improvement cycle takes about ten weeks, as in the JD Chess method.
